A painting of my maternal grandmother by my grandfather ,Dennis Earle

In the 1920,s my Grandmother Vera married my Grandfather Dennis Earle who had just graduated an an artist from the Royal academy schools .  Vera had inherited a fortune and together they bought land in Sussex , England .

“The Sanctuary ‘ was a sort of Tolstoyan hippy commune based on the sermon on the mount “Ask and it shall be given” . They gave away a lot of land and the commune attracted all sorts of eccentrics , tramps , communists , anarchists , fascists ….Artists and writers including HG Wells , Aleister Crowley , Laurie Lee { who paid his rent gardening } among others .  This painting shows my Grandmother as a saintly nun -like figure with a touch of vanity one suspects !
